With a BA/BGlobalSt conjoint you can enrich your study of global issues with insights from a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, cultures and languages. You will develop skills for employment such as leadership, teamwork, public speaking, critical thinking, research and intercultural communication. Combine the wide range of subjects offered in Arts with an issues-based, interdisciplinary Global Studies major, language and area study. Planning your Bachelor of Global Studies/Bachelor of Arts conjoint

Year 1

For an Arts conjoint degree you have the option to choose either a single major or a double major.  In order to maximise your options choose two stage one courses in two Arts subjects in your first year.  For a BGlobalSt conjoint degree you require 255 points of Global Studies courses plus one General Education course and one elective course. See the planner for other requirements.  Note: A student is exempted from 15 points of General Education if they do one or two semesters of 45 points of study or more on a student exchange programme. All Global Studies students are strongly encouraged to go overseas during their degree on exchange, study abroad or experiential learning – or a combination of these!

Year 1 Summary:

Outline

1. Core. You must take the core course GLOBAL 100 (sem 1)
2. Major. In your first year you should take a total of three stage one courses for your major – this will comprise the courses required for your major except in the case of Transnational Cultures and Creative Practice where there are two required courses and a further course, chosen from the schedule of stage one courses listed for the major, is needed. You will need to check carefully the semester in which courses are taught in order to plan successfully.

• Global Environment and Sustainable Development must include:

15 points: ENVSCI 101 (sem 2) and

30 points from ECON 151 or 152 (sem 1 or 2), GLOBAL 101 (sem 1), HISTORY 103 (sem 1), POLITICS 106 (sem 2)

• Global Politics and Human Rights must include:

15 points: POLITICS 106 (sem 2) plus

15 points: PHIL 102 (sem 1) or 103 (sem 2) and

at least 15 points from ECON 151 or 152 (sem 1 or 2), GLOBAL 101 (sem 1), HISTORY 103 (sem 1)

• International Relations and Business must include:

at least 45 points from ECON 151 or 152 (sem 1 or 2), GLOBAL 101 (sem 1), HISTORY 103 (sem 1) and POLITICS 106 (sem 2)

• Transnational Cultures and Creative Practice must include:

at least 30 points from ECON 151 or 152 (sem 1 or 2), GLOBAL 101 (sem 1), HISTORY 103 (sem 1) and POLITICS 106 (sem 2)

An example of how to structure the first year of your BGlobalSt/Arts conjoint degree using International Relations and Business as a major in Global Studies and choosing Anthropology and History as Arts subjects.

Beyond Year 1

1. Core. To complete your BGlobalSt you need to take the core courses GLOBAL 200 and GLOBAL 300. Consideration needs to be given to the timing of these courses as there is a relationship between them. The coursework of GLOBAL 200 includes the preparation of a dissertation proposal. GLOBAL 300 comprises the writing of that dissertation.  Aim to complete Global 300 towards the end of your conjoint so that you can draw on the breadth of your studies in the writing of your dissertation. GLOBAL 200 should not be taken too soon.  It is suggested that GLOBAL 200 be taken in year three of your conjoint and Global 300 in year four.
2. Major. To complete your major you need 120 points, with at least 45 points at stage 3.  Choose two courses at stage two from options listed for your chosen major paying attention to the prerequisites for your desired stage three courses.

3. Language. Language study is sequential. You need 60 points of language acquisition so plan to complete this in two consecutive years during the course of your conjoint.  For Asian and European languages you must complete the Language Ability Declaration (LAD), and enrol in one of the beginner level courses listed in the first instance.  You will be placed in a class appropriate to your level.  For Māori and Pacific languages completion of the LAD is not necessary.  Don’t hesitate to seek advice from the relevant language programme if you need to. You are also strongly encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for study or experiential learning overseas.

4. Area. Area study relates to your chosen language. Two courses are required, one at stage two and one at stage three, chosen from the course listings for your chosen area. These are subject to availability.

5. General Education. Choose from courses in the following General Education schedules: Open, Arts, Business and Economics.The rule for GenEd courses is that you can only choose subjects that you have not already studied or do not plan to study during the course of your degree

  6. Elective study. The BGlobalSt conjoint allows 15pt of elective study – any subject. Either choose a course from the major listings or from elsewhere that enhances a component of your BGlobalSt degree.
